Cornerstone Care is a non-profit network of community health
centers and practices serving communities throughout
southwestern Pennsylvania. Our mission is to improve
the health of our patients and all the residents of the
communities we serve. We reach out to all individuals in recognition of the
barriers to accessing health, dental and mental care that
many of our neighbors face. These barriers include lack of
health insurance, lack of transportation, shortage of health
care providers, lack of providers accepting medical
assistance, and so forth. We continually strive to mobilize
resources in response to unmet community needs and provide
care to the entire community regardless of income status.
A volunteer board of directors, a majority who are patients,
governs us.
Cornerstone Care employs
approximately 160 professional, administrative, and support
staff. Our provider staff includes 7 Family Practice
Physicians, 2 Pediatricians, 4 OB/GYN physicians, 6
Physician Assistants, 3 General Dentists, 3 Podiatrists, 2
Nurse Practitioners, a Chiropractor, an Orthodontist, an
Oral Surgeon, a Psychologist, 3 Psychiatrists, 8 Therapists,
and 4 Dental Hygienists.
Most of our services are open
to the entire community, although some of our special
projects may have eligibility requirements defined by a
funding source. Our core medical, dental, and counseling
services apply a sliding fee discount for uninsured persons
with incomes of 200% of poverty level and below. We accept
most health insurances including Medical Assistance and
Medicare. Most of our uninsured patients, who are below the
poverty level, pay fees as low as $12 for a visit or service
that might be otherwise billed anywhere from 60 to 150
dollars or more.
We generate over $1.3 million
in free medicines for low-income uninsured patients; some of
whom need as much as $800 in medicine monthly. Cornerstone
Care sees over 80,000 patient visits per year. Our
services contribute over $8 million annually to the regional
economy. |

Cornerstone Care, Incorporated,
began operations in 1977 as Southeastern Greene Community
Health Center. Our first patient registered for an
examination with a nurse practitioner in the former dining
room of a two-story nineteenth century brick house on the
banks of the Monongahela River in Greensboro, Pennsylvania.
Organized by a group of concerned local citizens, the center
was established to serve the communities in Greene and
Fayette Counties with comprehensive, convenient, high
quality, ambulatory health care where before none had
existed. In 1989, community volunteers helped to build the
organization’s first modern facility; a 12,000 square foot
center in Greensboro. The first doctors joined the
organization in 1981. Dental care began soon after in a
small country church building.
Today, we
provide a full-range of primary and preventative health,
dental and mental care through 8 locations including
Community Health Centers in Greensboro, Rogersville, and
Burgettstown; a Counseling and Dental Center in Waynesburg;
Pediatric Associates of Washington; the Student Health
Center at Waynesburg College; Central Greene Pediatrics in
Waynesburg and a Mobile Medical and Dental Unit. |
